Sarah Boston

Background Information

Sarah Cynthia Lattimer Boston was born between 1834 and 1836 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, NY. This was Sarah's full name, but she went by many other different variations of that name. Those variations included: ‘Synthia’, ‘Cynthia Lattimer’, or ‘Sarah Lattimer’. Her father was Uriah Boston, a very influential public speaker, activist, and barber.

At Central College

Sarah Boston attended Central College in McGrawville, Cortland County NY from 1853-1855 in the academic department for students who were too young for actual college, or underprepared for college coursework. Sarah was between the ages of 17 and 19. The catalogs from 1853 and 1854 have Sarah going by Cynthia at the time.

She went to NYCC at the time that William Allen was starting his relationship with a student by the name of Mary King (1953) (Look at timeline)

The State Legislature introduced a bill to allow New York Central College to sell real estate. This could reflect the school's financial struggles and need to raise funds. Source: New York Herald, February 17, 1853 (Look at timeline)

Leonard G. Calkins began his tenure as NYCC president during the fall semester of 1853. Calkin's wife, Louisa S. Calkins, also taught at the college and was active in the dress reform movement. Source: Cortland Whig, December 1, 1853 (Look at timeline).
