Benjamin K. Sampson was always passionate about education. He was first schooled at a schoolhouse on his father's land that taught him, his siblings, and other free blacks and slaves. His father James observed his son's enthusiasm in education while he was learning in his father's schoolhouse and even engaged him to a private tutor from Massachusetts. Later, Benjamin attended a private school in New Burn, where his teacher, James S. Stanley, taught him grammatical literature, which would enable him to pursue a higher degree.
