Charles Augusta and Josephine Amelia Battiste

1856 Centralcollegecatalog.pdf

The Battiste siblings first arrived at Central College in the Fall of 1856. They are listed in this college catalog as students in the Academic Department, which educated pupils younger than college age.

Charles A. and Josephine Amelia Battiste, brother and sister, followed a winding path to Central College, but as with Joseph Hayden and Peter Howard, their story began in the vibrant free African-American community of Boston. Before arriving in Cortland County, however, their journey took them first to the Colored Orphan Asylum of Manhattan.
