The Vogelsang Family

Although not as prominent as the Forten's, Jane Vogelsang also came  from a family of wealthy abolitionists as well. They were still able to make a name for themselves during this time period.

Jane’s father, Peter, emigrated from the West Indies and has been active in many abolitionist and civil rights causes. Peter Vogelsang was a smart, well-known businessman which could have fostered the connections the Vogelsang family had with the Forten’s. Maria Miller, Jane’s mother, was not as well known, but could have been related to William Miller who was the step-father of Robert Purvis, another well known abolitionist.

Jane’s brother, Peter Vogelsang Jr., was A Civil War veteran. He served in one of the few African-American battalions and was given the chance to fight for his own freedom. He is considered one of the more famous Civil War veterans as he was portrayed in the movie "Glory." Peter survived the war and passed away in 1887.
